Glorious autumn sunshine greeted Kingsbridge for their league encounter with St Ives. The Cornish side have had their troubles but have come back strongly and on today's showing will be a force to be reckoned with at this level writes Jonathan Robinson.
The Kingsbridge side, still without the injured Toby Baldry, showed a few changes from last week and maybe this is why they are not playing as well as they should be. Stu Winzer was back propping and young Henry Blake made his first start at No. as did Adam Morgan on the wing.
Playing down towards the clubhouse, Kingsbridge had the better of the early exchanges. Spinning the ball wide was causing the home defence problems and a score from the backs looked likely. As it turned out a Kingsbridge score did come but it was from the evergreen Stu Winzer cantering in to score wide out. A great conversion from fly half Ben Newman gave Kingsbridge a 0-7 lead.
St Ives responded and they were soon back in the Kingsbridge 22. From a line out close to the line they managed to touch down. The conversion was missed.
Kingsbridge came back at the home side and although giving away a few penalties, they managed to work their way close to the try line. A concerted drive over the line resulted in Jack Winzer getting his hands on the ball to score. The conversion was missed.
St Ives responded almost immediately with a well taken penalty to bring the deficit down to two points. With half time approaching a score for either side would give them a phycological advantage and unfortunately it went to St Ives who scored an unconverted try to take a 15-12 lead.
With the slight slope in their favour St Ives controlled the start of the second half. Kingsbridge were being penalised incessantly and from one of those penalties the ball was spun wide to give the home winger and easy run in. 20-12 soon became 27-12 as St Ives started to dominate the visitors half and another forward drive enabled their excellent No. 12 to run in from the 22. The conversion was successful.
With the game slipping away from them Kingsbridge kept battling away and from a penalty kick to the corner, Oli Simons forced his way over to cut the deficit to 10 points. However the hosts managed to score a further try from an attempted Kingsbridge clearance to make the final score 34-17.
