Falmouth made the long journey to Kingsbridge and were welcomed by a large crowd and another terrific Sunday atmosphere at High House. With a guard of honour from the Under 14 girls, Emma Bewley led her team out to a great cheer and got the team off to the best possible start, grappling through the Falmouth defences to dive under the posts and open the scoring on a memorable day for the women and girls of KRFC.
Falmouth looked shell-shocked by the brilliant start and were further rocked by some confident handling from Ashley Pears which saw Hayley Hopkins scorch through. A Kingsbridge junior alumni, Erin Roberts, put in a thunderous tackle from which Charlotte Budgen happily gathered the ball and broke several tackles before laying the foundation for Erin to break down the blind side and put the try-machine Abi Lethbridge in for the first of her scores. Fi Hutchings and Zoe Clacy put in a typically rampaging performance with the latter nearly breaking through. Yet another break from Erin saw the ball find its way to Chloe Inch who darted in for a popular score. Her neat handling with Hayley saw another advance on the try line, with Pears scoring this time, a highlight for her excellent performance all match long.
Another score for the Lethbridge Flyer was soon followed by a virtuoso length-of-the-pitch by Hayley. Everyone took a breath as the half-time whistle blew. Falmouth rallied well in the second half, playing with heart and heads high. Kate Robinson took a number of tricky kicks out of the air and crashed, bashed and barnstormed away throughout the game for her best match yet. Some eye-catching breaks from Amelia Benfield followed before a superb advance from Lauren Jeffrey wreaked havoc in the Falmouth defences. Erin was quick to profit and score under the posts. Anna Linzell, Debbie Hainey and Phoebe Sherburn all supported play and delivered useful platforms for the backs to set up scoring positions.
Hayley, moving to 9 scored a try almost immediately before another graduate from the amazing KRFC junior section, Lucy Allen, turned on the afterburners to bring even more pace to this dizzying Kingsbridge performance.
A further try came the way of the Flyer before the whistle went for a mesmerising victory for the women in blue.
Each player on the day deserves a shout-out, this was a complete team performance from a club that has worked so hard at its girls’ and women’s set-up. Credit must go to players, young and more-established, and coaches alike for this composed, physical but fair performance of steely determination, skill and passion for a game that continues to bring so many different people together under one clear and commendable set of values.
