On Sunday 8th March Kingsbridge Women took on their rivals from Camborne in a top of the league table clash at high House.
Learnings from the previous encounter when the two sides met in Camborne had played a big part in the teams training over the last three months. To have a chance of beating a strong, organised team the Kingsbridge Women were going to have to tackle and defend with total commitment and attack with conviction and purpose.
The early exchanges were tough with strong tackles from both sides and powerful running in attack. Eventually Camborne got some go forward ball and created space on the left hand side which they exploited to score their first try. Despite the conversion being in front of the posts it was missed. Things got worse for Kingsbridge 15 mins later when Camborne managed to get some field position, eventually managing to force the ball over the line from close range. This time the conversion, crucially as it turned out, was successful. Camborne now had their confidence up and continued to attack the Kingsbridge try line. They were awarded a penalty 30 metres out which they took quickly whilst a number of the Kingsbridge defenders had their back to the ball. The Camborne player to her credit saw her opportunity and raced in for their third try.
The writing looked on the wall for Kingsbridge but these women are made of stern stuff and they started to implement what they have been doing in training. Great lead up play from backs and forwards particularly, hooker Hanna Gale, flanker Kate Robinson and centre Charlotte Budgen resulted in them getting close to the Camborne try line and No8 Maddie Grant forcing her way over for the first Kingsbridge try, just before half time.
At half time they were reminded of the way they can play, to be aggressive in attack and take the game to Camborne. The next try was outstanding, starting in their own half with every player in the team going forward, supporting each other, making accurate passes, keeping possession and putting pressure on the Camborne defence. It eventually resulted in winger Tamsyn Wilson dotting down in the corner.
There was still 15 mins left and Kingsbridge had the momentum with them. They created space on the left for speedy full back Hayley Hopkins to race around the defence to go over for a try wide out.
Kingsbridge threw everything at Camborne for the last 5 minutes but were unable to find their way through the resilient defence for the winning score. Despite the final result the Kingsbridge women can take a great deal of credit for the way they played and should be very proud of their playing performance. Final Score 15-17
The next game is against St Austell away on Sun 22nd March.
