Kingsbridge eventually eased to a bonus point win over Falmouth but had made life difficult for themselves, with a sloppy 20 minutes at the start of the second half. Kings were the more dominant side but were given a good test by a feisty Falmouth.
In difficult conditions and playing into a strong wind, Kingsbridge started brightly and were immediately on the front foot as cemtre Ben Glover broke through and found number 8 Matt Allen, who took the ball deep into the Falmouth half. Unfortunately, Kings missed out on a certain try as the last pass was correctly called forward. Falmouth took the early lead with a penalty, but couldn’t keep it for long, with Falmouth down to 14 after the game’s first yellow card, and then falling behind as Allen broke through again and fed the ball out, which saw winger James Oggelsby over in the corner. Conversion missed. Kingsbridge put the home side under a lot of pressure but their defence held firm, until Allen, yet again, ghosted through just before half time to put the visitors further ahead at 3-12.
Kingsbridge started the second half as if they had already won and were jolted as Falmouth came back into the game, strongly scoring with a catch and drive from a lineout. Kingsbridge were not helping themselves, as a series of penalties were awarded against them. However, they eventually broke out after a Newman intercept, with Parrot on hand to nearly score, being dragged down just short of the try line. Quick recycling of the ball saw Allen over for his second. Newman added the extra points. Kings were themselves down to 14 now, as Allen was sinbinned, no one - including Falmouth - being quite sure as to why. Just one of the strange decisions made by an inconsistent referee. After some good work by Canavali in securing a penalty, Kings were deep in the Falmouth half and, from the resulting lineout, Lowry burst over for his first Kingsbridge try. Conversion missed. Final score 8-24.
A good result on the road for Kingsbridge who in scoring a bonus point win climb to fourth in the league. Special mention must go to Toby Baldry who made his first team debut and acquitted himself admirably. Surely one for the future .
This week sees the 1st XV take a well earned break from the league, whilst the A XV have no fixture this weekend. Kingsbridge Colts are scheduled to welcome Paignton Colts to High House in a friendly with KO at 2.30 pm.
