Kingsbridge and Penryn, two of the form teams, served up a scrappy match, although the heavy conditions hampered any chances of flowing rugby. At the end, it was Kingsbridge’s ill-discipline that cost them the victory, giving away too many penalties with a referee who, at times, was giving some baffling decisions. His reading of the offside law allowed both teams to destroy any chance of attacking rugby as the midfield was strangled. The sides were evenly matched, both leading at times, but in the end, Penryn edged out the visitors with two late penalties to win 13-10.
Kings started brightly with a great break by captain Jake Vincent followed by a possible score for centre George Banfield after an interception, but was called back for a penalty. Penryn’s first visit into the Kingsbridge half resulted in a penalty, and from the resulting lineout, the catch and drive from Penryn saw them over for the game’s first try, which was converted. Kings struck back with a Ben Newman penalty but couldn’t take advantage of another as his second attempt missed. The game meandered to a half time score of 7-3.
Both sides were making plenty of mistakes at the beginning of the second half, but it was Penryn who had the better of the play, putting Kingsbridge under a lot of pressure. To Kings credit, they held out with some courageous defending, taking confidence from their defence they came out of their shells and put a series of sustained attacks together. Too often they took the wrong option. Eventually, Penryn’s defence ran out as a slick miss move saw Banfield over. Newman converted to put the visitors ahead for the first time. When they should have tightened their grip on the game, Kings discipline deserted them and gave away soft penalties, two of which Penryn converted to leave the final score 13-10.
Leaving with a loosing bonus point won’t be too disheartening for Kings as they look forward to some home comforts next week for the visit of Tiverton to High House. KO 2.30 pm. Kingsbridge A XV also welcome Plymouth University for a 2.00 pm kick off on the Longfield Pitch.
