Kingsbridge eventually ran out comfortable winners against lowly placed Saltash, who looked a far better side than their league position would suggest. Kings were second best for much of the first half and it needed the exciting Toby Baldry to ignite the home side, to what would eventually be a decent 40-22 victory.
Kingsbridge started the match well but soon fell behind to the visitors, some poor defence allowed Saltash to touch down for the games first try which they converted. Kings came back immediately after a penalty lineout was won and the ball was recycled well with Number 8 Matt Allen crashing over . The conversion was missed. On 15 minutes Kingsbridge went down to fourteen as the over officious referee carded Kingsbridge flanker Freddie Buckle . Saltash took full advantage and scored another try which again was converted.
The game exploded into life as winger Baldry took matters into his own hands and sprinted clear to score his first points for the senior team with Fly half Ben Newman adding the extras. Saltash kept attacking and it was only great defence led by Captain Jake Vincent that kept them at bay. On the stroke of half time Baldry ran a great line, giving Kings the overlap, which saw in-form winger Greg Parrot over . Newman converted to leave the home side edging the first half 19-14
Kingsbridge upped their game in the second half and straight from the kick off were playing with real purpose. From a lineout Kings drove hard and eventually prop Mike Powell was over for the first points of the half. Newman was again successful with the conversion. Kingsbridge were then penalised for a no arms tackle and Saltash took advantage with a converted penalty. Kingsbridge were now in the ascendancy and made it count as Baldry sliced the Saltash defence to pieces to touch down under the posts for his second. Newman converting.
Keeping the pressure up, it wasn’t long before centre Glover forced his way through only to be held up on the line but Vincent was on hand to recycle the ball and score . Newman successful again. Saltash deserved their final score after a whole hearted performance with a try at the end of the game . Final score 40-22.
Exciting times for Kingsbridge who will be fully tested as they visit high flying St Austell on Saturday. Kingsbridge A XV welcome Plymstock Albion Oaks to High House in the Devon Merit Table with a 2.30 pm kick off.
