Kingsbridge’s Wadebridge woes continued as they lost 23-15 in a match that they surely feel they could have won. Racing to a 10-nil lead they were simply not clinical enough, spurning scoring opportunities as they totally dominated the first 20 minutes of the game.
The first half started with a bang for Kings as centre George Banfield broke free and took the ball deep into Wadebridge 22. From the next scrum the ball was fed quickly to fly half Ben Newman, who glided through untouched to score under the posts. Newman converted his own try. Keeping the pressure on, Kings kept pegging back the home side and went further ahead with a long range penalty from Newman. The next ten minutes were all about Kingsbridge, but try as they might they failed to score and blew at least two try scoring opportunities. On seemingly Wadebridge’s first visit into Kings half, they were awarded a penalty which was successful and followed up with another, to leave the visitors hanging onto their 6-10 lead.
The second half started as the first ended, with a penalty to the home side. Taking confidence from this, Wadebridge started to really challenge, while Kings failed constantly to exit properly by poor kicking. Wadebridge were gifted a try as a 22 dropout landed straight in the arms of a Wadebridge player, who simply caught and ran straight through to score, and with a successful conversion, took the lead for the first time. Kingsbridge were now on the back foot and from a scrum close to their line they were pushed back, allowing the home side’s eight to pick up and score. Conversion successful. Substitute Dave Stephens made an instant impact as he broke free, only to be hauled down meters from the line, but it seemed to inspire Kings to make inroads, and eventually Banfield raced over in the corner to narrow the score line. Newman narrowly missed the conversion, which would have at least got Kings a losing bonus point. Final score 23-15.
