Despite the weather during the week, the A VX welcomed top of the table unbeaten Tavistock IIs to High House on Saturday. The away side only travelled with 13 players so Kingsbridge with a 19 man squad lent the opposition 2 so it was a 15 a side match. The first 20 minutes of the match saw Kingsbridge keeping Tavistock pinned in their own 22 and with tries from James Lake and Ian Macey they were 10 - 0 up after all the pressure. Another try from Macey seemed to wake Tavy up and after some good carrying by the forwards they scored a converted try to make the score at half time 15 - 7.
The start of the second half saw both sides carrying the ball well and the first score went to Kingsbridge when the ball was passed down the line and when winger Max Bewley took the ball at pace on the Tavistock 10 metre line he sprinted past his opposite number and touched down in the corner, James Ogglesby converted to make it a 15 point gap. Tavistock scored next when their winger intercepted a pass from one of Kingsbridge's centres, when they were attacking,and he took the ball from his 22 and managed to touch down despite a spirited attempt by second row Jamie Nicholls to catch him. The try was converted to make the score 22 - 14. The next score came from Kingsbridge when Joe Dixon got his hands on the ball and managed to break a couple of tackles and although it seemed as if he was held up just before the try line he was able to wriggle over and touchdown, again Ogglesby converted. From the ensuing kickoff Kingsbridge made the mistake of not calling for the ball which resulted in a home sides line out in their own 22 which Tavistock won and their forwards started to pick and drive scoring their third converted try and close the gap again. This was the closest the away side would get as Kingsbridge scored again when fullback Ogglesby managed to link up in the line and find the gap to score. The final try came when Kingsbridge had a scrum in Tavys' 22 and number 8 Lake picked up and drove over to score his second of the day, Ogglesby converted to make the final score 41 - 21.
Thanks should go to Harry Usher, Lewis Winzer, Dale Jefferies Brecon Trigger and Sam Darke who all had stints playing for the opposition, and a special mention goes to Captain Dave Evans who was awarded the man of the match for his tackling in defence and good line breaks, which set a good example to the rest of the team.
