2nd XV Team Photo
On a windy day at High House the A XV welcomed Plymouth University IIIs for a merit table fixture. Kingsbridge had received their new set of team shirts before the game, and with the shirt sponsors watching on they didn't disappoint them. Playing against the wind in the first half the home side spent the first five minutes running the ball out from their own half only for a knock on halting them, Kingsbridge were penalised in the ensuing scrum and Plymouth Uni attempted to convert the penalty but it slid to the left of the posts. After this Kingsbridge dominated play and tries were scored by second row James Hannon ,No 8 James Lake and man-of -the match prop Joe Dixon the last one being converted by Jack West to take the score to 17-0. The bonus point try came when a penalty try was awarded to the homeside after the university denied Lake a scoring chance of a pushover try illegally. However Lake did score his second try of the game close to the end of the half, West converted and the halftime score was 31-0.
The second half was similar to the first half. Kingsbridge were dominant in the scrum and despite Plymouth Uni never giving up the home sides staunch defense would not let them cross the try line, Hooker Callum Holbrook was the next to get on the score sheet with two tries both converted by West. The final try of the game was the best and started with Kingsbridge running the ball out from their own 22 and when winger Max Bewley received the ball from veteran Dale Jefferies at 15 he sprinted past two defenders and then managed to pass the ball in the tackle to flanker Ian Macey who took the ball at speed, on the away sides 22 and handed off a defender to touch down, West again converted, to make the final score 52-0.
Although all the try scorers were forwards this was by no means a game of 10 man rugby and credit should go to the backs as well with their hard running, great lines they were taking, and strong defence. This was a good all round performance and the silly mistakes of the last few games seem to be disappearing.
