Kingsbridge strolled to any easy victory over bottom of the league Tiverton, scoring nine tries on their way to a 53 –7 win. In cold, windy conditions, this game showed why, on their day and with a full squad, they are a match for any team in the division. Alongside storming Stu Harris, and the speed and incisive running of George Banfield, the whole team played with a clarity that had been lacking the week before. Kings took the game to Tiverton who were guilty of too many mistakes and a malfunctioning lineout.
King’s first try came from a clever lineout move, which saw Harris break through to touch down. Newman missing the conversion. Five minutes later, Harris broke free again, offloading well to Glover and on to Vincent, who scored. Newman converting. A lack of concentration saw Tiverton bounce back to score a converted try after some badly missed tackles. A quick tap penalty from Banfield saw him race clear and out-sprint the defence for his second. Newman, who was having a good day with his kicking out of hand, drilled Tiverton back into their 22. After a series of good attacks, Newman threw a fine, long pass to Parrot, who went over in the corner. Kings final score of the half came after a series of powerful scrums, the last of which gave the much improved Burner a simple pick up and over for a try to leave the home side leading 29-7.
Allowing Tiverton no respite in the second half, Kings opened their account after Harris turned the ball over and slick hands saw Banfield race clear. The try of the match followed, as Glover, standing at 10, passed onto Newman, who had Trout running a perfect line and slicing through to touch down. Newman adding the extra. Tiverton, refusing to capitulate, had their best period of the game, but Kings defence stood firm and finally broke out with the strong running Parrot clearing from their 22. After a Newman intercept, it was Parrot again who ran a good supporting line and went over for his second, with Newman converting. Not to be out-done, Harris and Banfield combined to give Banfield yet another hattrick, making the final score 53 -7.
An easy victory for Kings after a good all-round team performance based on a really solid game from their forwards, all who must take credit .
This weekend sees Kingsbridge welcome Saltash to High House for their final home match before Christmas. KO 2.30pm. Kingsbridge A XV travel in the opposite direction as they visit Saltash in the Devon Merit Table. Kingsbridge Colts currently have no fixture arranged.
