A depleted Kingsbridge, who could only muster 15 players, suffered a heavy 49-12 defeat away to Truro on Saturday. As brave as they were, with a side seeing 6 changes and no reserves due to availability problems, they could do little to stem the tide of an organized Truro. However, it was not all one-way traffic and those that did travel should be proud of themselves. A pack, that for the majority of the game dominated the home side, deserved a better result and had it not been for last minute mistakes and a high penalty count, the score line would have been much closer. Special mention to the Kings front five who put in an exceptional stint with Henry Blake at eight outstanding.
Truro were quick out of the blocks as they scored a converted try in the first ten minutes as Kingsbridge, giving away a series of early penalties, were punished as the home side crossed. Kings responded almost immediately after a penalty to them, deep into the Truro 22, from where a well-executed lineout saw them drive over, Lowry emerging with the ball. Kings continued to dominate the tight and a fine break from Leatham saw the last pass go astray, resulting in the first of the home side breakaway tries. Things got no better when Truro collected from the restart and ran straight through to record their third try. By no means were Kings not still in the game but a series of errors meant they failed to take advantage of their pack dominance, and it was against the run of play when Truro scored their bonus point try. They even had time to score one more before half time to leave the score 35-5.
Kingsbridge came out battling in the second half, managing to win the territorial game, but were soon back under the posts as Truro scored through a clever midfield attack. Back came Kingsbridge with a well-deserved score as they pummeled away at the Truro defense, which saw the returning Freddie Buckle crash over from close range, Newman converting. It was against the run of play when Truro scored their final points leaving the final score 49-12
It can only be hoped that King’s next games see a few of last week’s absentees back to bolster the squad for what could be a long season!
Kingsbridge entertain Wadebridge at High House on Saturday with kick of at 3pm, whilst the Colts travel to face Torquay in a friendly.
